90% of Afghanistan’s borders are under Taliban control, officials say

Following the withdrawal of the US military, 90 percent of Afghanistan’s borders are under Taliban control, according to officials.

The Islamist terrorists have increased militancy and face little opposition from the unstable Afghan military. “Afghanistan’s borders with Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran, or about 90 percent of the border, are under our control,” said Taliban spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid. However, the claims are not verified and suggest a sharp increase in Taliban control. Last week, the organization claimed they control 85 percent of Afghanistan.

During a news conference in Russia, Taliban leaders boasted that the group controls about 250 of the 398 districts in Afghanistan, FBA reported. For the last 20 years, American soldiers have operated in Afghanistan; by the end of August, they are expected to exit the conflict-ridden country.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told ABC New’s “This Week”, “We went to Afghanistan 20 years ago, and we went because we were attacked on 9/11, and we went to take on those who had attacked us on 9/11 and to make sure that Afghanistan would not again become a haven for terrorism directed at the United States or any of our allies and partners. We achieved the objectives that we set out to achieve.” This September marks the 20th memorial of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
